4A Arts Adds Public Health Leader Lyndon Haviland to Board, Signals Growing Recognition of Creativity as Wellness Infrastructure

New York, N.Y., November 18, 2025 — 4A Arts (American Alliance of Artists and Audiences) announces the appointment of Dr. Lyndon Haviland, a public health expert and global wellness advocate, to its Board of Directors. This expansion underscores the growing recognition of arts and creativity as essential components of public health and community wellbeing.
“Self-expression is vital to mental health,” said Dr. Haviland. “Science shows that art helps people heal. 4A Arts is raising awareness of that connection. I look forward to helping inspire narrative change around the link between the creative economy and the wellbeing economy.”
Dr. Haviland brings decades of experience in public health policy and wellness advocacy to an organization dedicated to uniting Americans around the understanding that arts and culture are essential to thriving communities. Her appointment comes as health leaders increasingly recognize creative expression as a powerful tool to address mental health challenges, social isolation, and community resilience. With growing research showing that artistic engagement can reduce anxiety and depression, improve cognitive function, and strengthen social bonds, programs integrating the arts into healthcare—often called “social prescribing”—are emerging as promising complements to traditional medicine.
“Dr. Haviland’s expertise positions us to make a compelling case that arts funding is health funding, education funding, and economic development funding,” said Board Chair Luis R. Cancel. “Her leadership will help us build coalitions across sectors that haven’t traditionally worked together.”
“We’re working to change how Americans think about the role of creativity in civic life,” said Executive Director Gavin Lodge. “Dr. Haviland’s expertise helps us demonstrate that supporting the arts isn’t just about culture—it’s about building healthier, more connected communities.”
Dr. Lyndon Haviland is an internationally recognized public health leader with over 35 years of experience advising organizations such as the World Health Organization, UN Women, and the UN Foundation. Currently Chair of the Foundation Board for the CUNY School of Public Health & Health Policy, she has been honored by Columbia University and the American Public Health Association for her leadership and mentorship. A frequent contributor to The Hill, Dr. Haviland is a passionate advocate for women’s health, equity, and social justice.
